Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to some Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have a question that is not addressed please email us at messiah@messiahlutheran.org or call us at 620-342-8181.

Do I have to be Lutheran to attend Messiah?

In short, no. While Messiah is a Missouri Synod Lutheran Church, we are open to all people seeking to grow in their personal relationship with Jesus. Being Lutheran isn't nearly as important as having a heart to seek Christ. If you want to learn more about Lutheran doctrine, we have a class just for this, but it's certainly not a requirement for attending.

What is your practice regarding communion?

We celebrate the Lord’s Supper on the first and third Sundays.  We are reminded by the Apostle Paul to examine ourselves before we participate in this sacrament.  We believe that Christ’s true body and blood are offered in these elements of bread and wine.  All who share our beliefs and who come with repentant hearts are invited to join us.  Those who have never communed with us before are asked to speak to the Pastor before this service.  White grape juice is available in the center of the tray for those who prefer it.  If you are not ready to participate in the Lords’ Supper with us, please feel free to come forward for a blessing – folding of your arms will indicate to the Pastors your desire to receive a blessing instead of communion.  If you have additional questions, we invite you to contact Pastor Hosch at ehosch@messiahlutheran.org.

What do I wear?

We don't have a dress code and we certainly wouldn’t want you to worry about this! Wear whatever is comfortable and appropriate. Some people wear jeans and t-shirt, while others come in “business casual” attire. We are more concerned about your heart and your needs than we are about your clothing.

What are the differences in your two services?

Saturdays at 6:00 p.m. and Sundays at 8:30 a.m. we offer a traditional service with liturgy and hymns. The contemporary service Sundays at 11:00 a.m. features praise songs and band.

What door do I enter with so many outside entrances?

There are three main entrances to our building.  One entrance is on the south side (into the fellowship hall), on on the east side (large wooden doors) and the other on the west (alley).  The South and  west doors are handicapped accessible with lifts available inside to navigate stairs.

How do I become a member of Messiah?

To become a member of our congregation, we ask that you attend our New Member class, Messiah 101, to learn more about us and our beliefs. This is a one day class offered 3-4 times a year (usually in the fall, winter, and spring).

What is confirmation?

Confirmation is a two year commitment for the 7th and 8th grade students. Adult Confirmation is offered as well through Messiah 101 offered at various times throughout the year. Confirmation provides an opportunity for the individual Christian, relying on God’s promise given in Holy Baptism, to make a personal public confession of the faith and a lifelong pledge of commitment to Christ.

Are you going to ask me for money?

Absolutely not! When the offering plate is passed around, we do not expect you to participate in giving any monetary gift to our church! What we would love is if you filled out our “fellowship cards” located on the back of the pew in front of you and just provide us with some quick information so we can send you a gift as a “thank you” for being with us!
